NLP and motivation-Why you may not be getting what you think you want…

NLP and motivation

Ok the headline for this post is a bit cryptic. Here’s why…

I was thinking about someone I know who just finished school. They didn’t pass any of their exams and they feel a bit down about it. This young guy had told me he wanted to become a doctor. A medical man and to heal people. No easy feat. In fact in terms of difficulty and time it doesn’t get much harder.

Unless you want to be a veterinarian of course….Woohoo (Tough !! )

So I have been spending time considering what it was that stopped this young guy from doing what he said was his dream and this is what I think may be the problem.

The goal was not compelling or clear enough for him to be motivated to do the work it takes to achieve at that high level.
Th ehills are alive with the sound of metal 300x225 NLP and motivation Why you may not be getting what you think you want...

Confused ambitions lead to confusing results…

So if you aren’t getting the results you think that you want from your life then maybe you could consider how motivated you are to achieve that goal. Does it get you out of bed every day really buzzing about the day ahead. If not then either the goal may not be quite right for you or you could be fatigued from a long time spent in pursuing that goal. It could also be that you are overwhelmed due to information overload.

There are other factors to consider.

Is this really YOUR dream or has it been foisted on you by someone else like a parent or a spouse. Be honest here because you are only allotted a certain amount of time on this planet. Don’t delay on going after the life you really want. Tomorrow doesn’t always come..

There will be a time when you will wish for a tomorrow and it may be too late.

So if you are working on your Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) and not getting results, you could consider two other likely causes for lack of progress.

What you are doing may be out of alignment with your values and your heart isn’t really in it. Your values are what is important to you. it is also part of what you call your conscience.
You use your values as an ethical scale to use when planning things and also to measure your results against when you are done.

You may be chunking the tasks in an ineffective way

The other thing could be that you are either too “big picture” ( Chunked up, as we call it in NLP) or too detailed ( Chunked down) for the stage you are at in your endeavour.

What I often do is take a step back to realistically assess progress when managing projects, as well as plotting how things are going using a Gant chart or critical path planning. Quite often you will find you are closer to your outcome than you think and persistence is the key.

I will go into more depth on each of these topics and roadblocks in the near future.

By the way. It turns out the young man was sufficiently motivated to help people change lives. He just didn’t have the patience for the long haul and wanted his patients and clients to get results quickly and easily.

He will be attending my 2012 NLP Practitioner training so he can effectively and predictably help people to make positive changes in their life…

NLP Community Event as part of Adult Learning Week..

The times they are a changin'

As part of adult learning week I am running some community events about using NLP to learn more easily and to remember more of what you have learned. This is what is known as accelerated learning.

Why is it important that you have these skills?

Because the ability to adapt to our ever changing world has never before been so important. Learning is simply adapting to changes.

The world is changing rapidly. I'm sure you will have noticed. You don't know what changes will have occurred when you next watch the news. Most people change because they are forced to.

This is reactive change and can be likened to closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. These changes are often carried out in a state of fear and uncertainty and as such aren't always thought out in the best way.

Smart people learn how to adapt so that they are prepared for changes before they happen. They see & can leap aboard of new opportunities as they happen and ride that winner all the way to the finish line. Making changes this way is done from a state of confidence about being able to adapt easily so that you thrive and prosper.

NLP is about having the flexibility to adapt to changes and about learning new skills rapidly and easily.

In the 21st century the greatest skill anyone can learn is how to adapt to change...

If you want to get THE unfair advantage that will make a difference in your life then be there.

NLP presupposes or assumes that you are in charge of your own thoughts. There are of course those who say that this isn’t true. These people tend to not be successful or satisfied with their life and fall into the category of what many people refer to as “victims”

The reason I raise this so early on in this article is because it’s important to think about who is actually in charge of your thinking processes. The reason for getting clear on this is that everything you experience in your life gets processed by the six inches of grey matter between your ears. So you might as well take control of what goes on in there. It’s far preferable to be in charge as compared to having your thinking dictated to you, by someone else.

This is one of the major NLP presuppositions which is that you are “at cause’. Now many people get kind of freaked out by this because it means they are responsible for their own life. I tend to re-frame this as they are in control of what happens to them and the quality of life they have.

So far we’ve discovered that by choosing to take responsibility for your thoughts you get more choice for the results you get from your life.

Here’s another thing. Thoughts are what you use to construct communication with. Some people say we communicate with words but that’s only part of the picture. Communication also involves something called State which is the sum total of all of your physiology and your feelings and your body posture as well as your emotions and what you are thinking. So State is a pretty big thing.

And State is a two way thing. What I mean by that is that your state affects your choice of words and the language you use when communicating. This in turn affects the sort of responses you get in reply to your words.

Here’s a simple example of that. When you are in the state called anger the words you choose and how you say them tend to be different to the ones you use when you are in the state called loving.

So your internal state affects how you communicate with the external world. This in turn affects the response you get back from the external environment which in its turn then has an affect on your internal state again.

This is why we say in NLP that managing your state is the first and most important thing for you to do when you want to communicate with someone.

This includes you because as you just noticed you react to messages you receive as well as the ones you send. So if you’re going to talk to your self you may as well be nice to yourself as it will make your whole day happier and more enjoyable.

In my NLP Courses and trainings I go into much more depth on this topic.

Wyatt Woodsmall was one of the original developers of NLP.

In this TED X talk Wyatt lashes out at our current inadequate educational system. Wyatt is of the same opinion that I have which is that Education should first and foremost teach students how to learn. In the 21st Century it is estimated that people will have between 3 and 6 careers over their working life and will therefore be constantly learning.

The fact that your children are taught WHAT to learn as compared to HOW to learn shows up the short sightedness of our current education system.

NLP and Propaganda. How to tell the difference..

My Colleagues will hate me for this…

Much of NLP’s infamy comes from the fact that it is the study of how people do things really well.

One of those things that were studied was sales people and how they convince people to buy things. This isn’t what NLP teaches by the way because we added in something called ecology which is the study of consequences.
So yes you top the sales league for your company having sold 183 vacuum cleaners to Mrs smith but you have problems ahead in the form of the FTC and the 182 vacuum cleaners she will probably return to you.

But this isn’t about sales or not directly.

Count Alfred Korzybski was a Polish linguist who observed the language that a certain Mr A. Hitler was using in prewar world war 2 Germany.

He was concerned enough that he wrote about his concerns to the Government of the United States of America.

When the US entered the war after the bombing of Pearl harbour he was employed by the US government to assist them with their own propaganda efforts.

Here are some of the types of tricks that are employed by Governments to convince you of “the truth” This article was published on Goldsilver.com which is one of my favourite sources of information about the real economy.

Accelerated Reading Using NLP

Rather than go into the what and the how of accelerated reading I thought it may be more useful for you to discover why it's important.
A colleague forwarded this link to me, saying "Here are even more whys for your accelerated reading techniques."
So here they are. Even more whys.

By the way. In an ever more rapidly changing world it makes sense to be able to adapt and change more rapidly and easily does it not..?
